As a traveller, you are entitled to certain compensations when flights are delayed or cancelled:

  • As stipulated by EU Regulation 261/2004, you are entitled to receive up to €600 flight delay compensation regardless of the actual cost of the ticket
  • As long as the flight took place within the last six years, a claim may be made

  • Call the airline to get a formal reason as to why the flight was delayed

Conditions for Making a KLM Flight Delay Compensation Claim

KLM flight delay compensation is based on the actual distance of the flight, not the price paid for the ticket. By current EU regulations, the flight must depart from the gate within three hours of the scheduled time (limited benefits for flights delayed by two hours).

The money is paid back as follows:

  • €250 for flights up to 1500km
  • €400 for flights ranging from 1501km to 3500km
  • €600 for flights longer than 3500km

KLM Flight Delay Compensation Rules:

  • With flights of 1500km delayed two hours or more, you will receive food and beverage credit (usually with vouchers). The airline must also provide two free communications (phone calls, emails, and/or faxes)
  • With flights between 1501km and 3500km delayed three hours or more, you will receive food and beverage credit (usually with vouchers). The airline must also provide two free communications (phone calls, emails, and/or faxes) for flights delayed three hours or more.
  • With flights of more than 3500km that are delayed three hours or more, you will receive food and beverage credit (usually with vouchers). The airline must also provide two free communications (phone calls, emails, and/or faxes) for flights that are delayed three hours or more.
  • With flights experiencing delays of five hours or more, you can request withdrawal from the flight at no penalty. You should also be reimbursed for alternative transportation needed to your original destination by the airline.
  • If a flight is delayed until the next day, both the hotel stay and transportation to and from those accommodations should be covered by the airline.
